Can You Really Live in Lakewood Ranch Without a Golf Cart?

If you’ve been researching Lakewood Ranch, you’ve probably seen the dream.

Drone shots sweeping over palm-lined streets. Families waving from driveways. Decked-out golf carts cruising past tennis courts like it’s some Florida version of The Truman Show.

It looks fun. Relaxed. Resort-like.
And yeah… a little hard to resist.

But here’s the truth: Lakewood Ranch is golf cart-friendly.
That doesn’t mean you can just hop in and roll wherever you want.

The Reality of Golf Cart Living

Within your own village? A golf cart is perfect. Pool trips, clubhouse happy hours, or a sunset cruise with your dog in the passenger seat? Totally fair game.

You can even take it outside your community-but only on roads posted under 35 mph.

And that’s where most people hit the wall.

Try to cross University Parkway, Lakewood Ranch Boulevard, or State Road 70, and you’ll quickly realize: this isn’t The Villages. Those roads are built for cars, not carts.

Yes, you can make a cart street legal with DMV registration, headlights, turn signals, and a windshield… but even then, there are still plenty of major roads and intersections you can’t cross.

So before you picture yourself carting from brunch at Main Street to sunset at Waterside, just know-it’s not happening.

Why a Golf Cart Won’t Replace Your Car

Here’s what a lot of people don’t realize:
Lakewood Ranch isn’t one neighborhood. It’s a 50-square-mile master-planned community with dozens of villages, town centers, and miles of high-speed roads in between.

That means your cart might get you to pickleball or your neighbor’s food truck night—but you’re still driving your SUV to:

Costco or Target
Dinner on Main Street
UTC shopping
Even Publix for groceries

This is Florida suburbia. It’s beautiful, but it’s car-centered. According to WalkScore.com, most of Lakewood Ranch has a walk score of 0. Meaning: you’re not walking to Publix, and you’re not carting there either.

Where Golf Carts Do Make Sense

Now, don’t get me wrong. In the right village, golf carts are awesome.

If you live in a gated, amenity-packed community like Del Webb, The Isles, or Esplanade, your golf cart is a lifestyle accessory. It makes sense for:

Morning pickleball matches
Happy hour at the clubhouse
Rolling over to the dog park
Food truck nights or community movie nights

It’s low-stress, fun, and way easier than firing up the car for a three-block ride.

But whether or not you can even have one depends on your HOA. Some require garage storage. Some ban outdoor charging stations. Some don’t allow carts at all.

So the first thing you should ask before ordering a lifted cart with neon underglow is: Will my HOA even allow it?

The Fun (and Not-So-Fun) Side of Carts

People love them because they’re social. They’re fun to decorate for parades. Parking’s easy at neighborhood events. And let’s be honest-they just make the day feel more like vacation.

But… Florida weather doesn’t care.
It rains sideways. It’s hot. And unless you trick it out with a fan or enclosure, you’ll still sweat through your polo.

And yes-your HOA can and will still send you a violation letter, flamingo decals or not.

So… Do You Need a Golf Cart?

Short answer: No.

Most Lakewood Ranch residents don’t have one. They drive their cars, get everywhere they need to go, and never feel like they’re missing out.

But here’s the nuance: if you’re the type who loves neighborhood events, social energy, and quick clubhouse trips, a golf cart can add to that experience.

Some villages are perfect for golf cart living. Others? Not at all.
